    College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS)

Effective July 1, 2009, the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is no longer administered. Recent Florida legislation, Senate Bill 1676, repealed the use of the CLAST to measure the College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) as a degree requirement for those undergraduates seeking an Associate in Arts (AA) degree or a Baccalaureate degree in Florida’s public colleges and universities. All scores earned on the CLAST prior to July 1, 2009, are still valid. Students who need to meet CLAS requirements on or after July 1, 2009, have multiple options other than the CLAST to satisfy the requirements using any combination of passing test scores and/or courses. The options below are effective as of August 24, 2009.

Students who do not meet the minimum score above and have completed their skill area without meeting the course GPA requirement (Option 2), are eligible to take the CPT for CLAS purposes. The test should be taken immediately after the student completes the second course of the skill area being assessed.

There is preparation and remediation available for students who do not achieve the required score on their first attempt of the CPT for CLAS purposes.

Students can increase their chances of success on any of the tests listed above (excluding CLAST which is no longer offered) by visiting an Authorized Department Representative for CLAS Preparation and Remediation for diagnostic testing.

    • For Reading and Writing, students will be recommended to take the appropriate REA 1125, ENC 1113 and/or ENC 1112, or an equivalent alternate course and/or a list of study materials including software prior to a subsequent attempt. After two unsuccessful attempts the student must complete a prescribed intervention program before being allowed to a third or fourth attempt on the CPT.

    • For Mathematics, students will be recommended to use a list of study materials including software prior to a subsequent attempt. After two unsuccessful attempts the student must complete a prescribed intervention program before being allowed to a third or fourth attempt on the CPT.

OPTION 2 - Meet CLAS requirements via course GPA (Grade Point Average).

  • To meet CLAS requirements for English communications (Reading and Writing), the student must have earned a minimum of 2.5 GPA in two (2) courses* for a minimum of six (6) semester hours of credit from the eligible courses listed below. The Gordon Rule Writing courses are only used after ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 have been completed with a grade of ‘C’ or a combination of 'C' and 'S' grade.

  • CLAS Eligible Courses
Reading & Writing Any Gordon Rule ENC course* (ENC 1101, ENC 1102, ENC 2300, or ENC 2301) combined with any other course* designated as Gordon Rule Writing course* at the time it was taken (ARC2702, ARH2051, ARH2740, DAN2130, ECO2013, IND1130, LIT2120, LIT2480, MUH2112, MUL2380, PHI2010, or THE2000).

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor to review their transcript and confirm that the Gordon Rule Writing courses they have taken are eligible for CLAS exemption.

Preparation and Remediation for students who choose to meet their CLAS requirement through continued reading and writing coursework.

If you have completed ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 and earned a grade of 'C' in both courses, you should choose any 3-credit, college-level English course from the group of eligible courses listed below and earn a grade of 'B' or higher.

    • LIT 2480 and ENC 2300 satisfy the Area 2 Oral Communication requirement.
    • LIT 2120 satisfies the Area 3 Humanities Group B requirement.
  • To meet CLAS requirements for Mathematics, the student must have earned a minimum of 2.5 GPA in two (2) courses* for a minimum of six (6) semester hours of credit from the eligible courses listed below.

  • CLAS Eligible Courses
Mathematics All MAC courses* beginning with last three digits 102 or higher, MAD2104, MAP2302, MAS2103, MGF1106, MGF1107, MGF1120, all MGF courses* with last three digits 202 or higher, all STA courses*, MTG2204, QMB2100 and all MTHA1, MTHA2, MTHA3 course values which are used at MDC for transferred-in CLAS eligible mathematic courses that are not in the MDC course dictionary.

Preparation and Remediation for students who choose to meet their CLAS requirement through continued mathematics coursework.

If you have completed two college-level mathematics and earned a grade of 'C' in both courses, you should choose another 3-credit, college-level mathematics course from the group listed above and earn a grade of 'B' or higher.

    *NOTES:
    • The following grades 'A' or 'B' or 'C' or 'S' in credit courses are eligible for meeting CLAS requirements.
    • CLEP, AP, IB credit, in CLAS eligible courses can be used. Effective July 29, 2009 an 'S' grade combined with another 'S' or 'A' or 'B' grade will satisfy the GPA option.
    • Lab courses are not CLAS eligible courses.
    • Courses that are non-college-level, including college prep are not CLAS eligible courses.
    • MDC courses that include a ‘9’ as the 2nd digit (using statewide course numbering system) are not CLAS eligible courses.
    • ENC1112, ENC1113, ENC1130, ENC1210, ENC2200, SPC, MAT and MTB prefix courses are not CLAS eligible courses..
    • Education majors are required to present passing scores from the CLAST or an optional approved examination for admission into a College of Education Program. The General Knowledge Test (GKT) is used for this purpose. The GKT is not used to meet the CLAS requirement for the A.A. degree.
    • Students seeking an undergraduate degree from a Florida institution who already have a Baccalaureate degree are exempt from meeting the CLAS requirement. Official documentation is required and the degree must be recognized by MDC for waiving General Education requirements.
    • Evaluation of CLAS exemptions from transfer credits are reviewed by District Institutional Research upon request.
    • There are previously approved Gordon Rule Writing courses which may also be used as CLAS eligible courses. The student must have successfully completed the course within the course's Gordon Rule effective period. A complete list of these courses is forthcoming soon. Meanwhile here are a few sample courses (AMH2010, AMH2020, ANT2410, DEP2000, POS2041, PSY2012, SYG2000, WOH2012 and WOH2022).

OPTION 3 - Meet CLAS requirements through an approved waiver.

  • Details on new CLAS waiver information for students without a disability who have completed either English or mathematics courses with grades of ‘C’ are forthcoming soon.

Student's CLAS status is located on the upper left side of the MDC transcript and also in the MDC degree audit on the Testing Analysis section. CLAST subtest score(s) and/or approved exemption(s) are displayed in the same area. The codes below are used to identify the different types of CLAS exemptions:
