Student Government Association
The Student Government Association serves as the student governing body responsible for representing students’ interests and addressing students’ needs with the campus leadership. Members learn leadership and organizational communication skills as they represent the student body on campus, college-wide and at state meetings.

WHAT IS SGA
SGA stands for Student Government Association. SGA promotes students’ interests and concerns and is designed to meet the needs of all the students at MDC Kendall Campus.
SGA Constitution (pdf)
WHAT DOES SGA DO?
- It provides leadership training and social interactions for its members
- It provides campus and political involvement
- It provides the opportunity to travel to conferences, retreats and meetings throughout the state where you can share and exchange student concerns and needs
- It provides a sense of accomplishment, belonging and pride during your time at MDC Kendall Campus
HOW DOES SGA PROVIDE ALL OF THE ABOVE?
During the beginning of each administration, all members receive leadership training in parliamentary procedure, time management and team building. These training sessions enable the SGA member to be more successful throughout the year at Senate, committee and executive cabinet meetings. In addition, SGA members participate on campus and college-wide committees making sure that student interests and concerns are met. SGA members also interact with other SGA members throughout Miami Dade College, the district and the state. They do so by attending College, district and state meetings, retreats and conferences. At this level SGA members exchange information that not only pertains to their campus but also to all of the students attending colleges in the State of Florida.
WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF SGA?
SGA consists of a president, vice-president and 25 senators. The SGA president represents the students at different campus and college-wide meetings. The president meets with the campus and college president and presents to them ideas, concerns and resolutions that the senate has voted upon. The vice president runs the senate meetings and is in charge of keeping the senate running smoothly. The senators, who are the backbone of SGA, perform many functions. Each has the opportunity to run different positions from within the senate in the executive cabinet. These positions are:
- Senate pro-tempore
- Government relations director
- Membership director
- Recording secretary
- Correspondence secretary
- Treasurer
Each of these senators has specific jobs as detailed in the SGA Constitution. However, their main function is to insure that students concerns are met.
In additions to being in the executive cabinet, a senator can also serve on a SGA committee. These committees are often referred to as the CHANT committees and they are:
- Community service committee
- Historian committee
- Advertising committee
- Newsletter committee
- Telephone committee
A member can either chair the committee or just serve as a member of the committee. Either way the rewards are great.
