Honoring global service

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), an international relief and development agency, held its 75th anniversary celebration honoring musician Paquito D’Rivera and the late Dolores Smithies at the historic Freedom Tower at MDC.

The IRC was founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, who sought assistance for victims of the Nazi ascendancy in Germany. Since that time, the organization has

responded to every major refugee crisis the world has seen. The IRC has 24 resettlement offices throughout the United States, including one in Miami, that provide refugee families with a breadth of services. The IRC in Miami has been especially helpful to Cuban and Haitian refugees.

Holding the event at the Freedom Tower was poignant as the building was an entry point for many refugees.
