Cultural Spotlight
Purvis Young
Purvis Young, an artist and painter whose life was chronicled in a documentary shown at MDC‘s Miami International Film Festival, passed away April 20 at the age of 67. Born in Miami's Liberty City, Young was a self-taught painter whose work had deep social meaning, depicting poverty, despair and crime plaguing the inner city. Young, whose canvases were often discarded objects such as pieces of cardboard and wood, had his work shown in museums around the country. His inspiring story was told in the 2006 documentary: Purvis of Overtown.
