Paragon of Literary Celebrations

Celebrating a milestone anniversary as the nation’s top literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International at MDC pulled out all the stops for its 30th installment, which opened with a visit from Spanish royalty Felipe de Borbón and Letizia Ortiz, Prince and Princess of Asturias.

Hundreds of thousands of bibliophiles packed Wolfson Campus for eight amazing days of author presentations and book signings, literary events and the expansive Street Fair, which featured hundreds of vendors this year with the presence of a number of national publishers.

Top Authors Abound

Presented annually by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ MDC, the Fair opened with one of the best-selling authors of all time when international sensation Dan Brown took the stage to inaugurate this year’s event. He was one of nearly 500 noted and best-selling authors who made appearances this year.

Other highlights included visits from Academy Award-winning actress Anjelica Huston; religious scholar Reza Aslan; bestselling authors Amy Tan, Mitch Albom and Terry McMillan; MSNBC news anchor and political commentator Chris Matthews; writer and TV show creator Brad Meltzer; 2013 MacArthur Fellow Karen Russell; actress Diane Ladd; playwright Nilo Cruz; and journalist and crime mystery author Edna Buchanan, among many others.

Full-Sensory Experience

As part of its newly added culinary events featuring chefs and their cookbooks, the Fair also offered presentations and cooking demonstrations by some of the nation’s top chefs, including Ingrid Hoffmann of Food Network’s Simply Delicioso.

A perennial favorite, this year’s Generation Genius children’s component drew thousands of families and children from local schools to activities aimed at fostering literacy and intellectual enrichment through a variety of reading, writing, storytelling, art, music and theater stations and performances. The Fair also gave away approximately 10,000 books this year to schoolchildren and families.
