A Healthy Twist to Language Acquisition

MDC's Health Literacy Project is earning accolades and grants for its innovative method of infusing health-related content into curriculum.

The Florida Blue Foundation, in partnership with the Florida Literacy Coalition, has recognized the achievements of MDC’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Development by awarding grants to the Hialeah and InterAmerican campuses in support of MDC’s Health Literacy Project. This is the first time two MDC campuses simultaneously have been awarded the grants. MDC’s Health Literacy Project infuses health-related content into the curriculum of advanced-level classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Using the Staying Healthy book provided by the Florida Literacy Coalition as part of the grant, students learn English in a contextualized format. The grant also supports project-based activities, such as health-related demonstrations students present to their peers and the campus community. These assignments are an integral part of the course, in that they help build students’ confidence and comfort levels when speaking English in public.
