Fostering an Entrepreneurial Spirit

The Idea Center’s Pioneers @ MDC speaker series has drawn leaders from some of the country’s largest and most dynamic companies to inspire students on their own path to entrepreneurial success.

This included an exciting, standing-room-only presentation by Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, who spoke on the eight great traits of an entrepreneur. His stimulating lecture included messages on the importance of having a champion’s mindset, being comfortable going against the grain, getting over the fear of failure, and cultivating both creative and analytical skills.

“As Miami Dade College’s hub of innovation and entrepreneurship, The Idea Center knows there is no better way to set up our students for success than to host the most innovative companies of the 21st century,” said Idea Center Executive Director Leandro Finol.

As part of her Pioneers presentation, Eliana Murillo, head of multicultural marketing for Google, discussed the needed job skills and increased opportunities for minorities at the tech giant. She founded the multicultural marketing and business development team at Google while also spearheading programs that support diversity in entrepreneurship, education and civic engagement with the use of technology.

Other Pioneers series speakers included George Logothetis, chairman and CEO of the Libra Group, an international business group comprising 30 subsidiaries active across six continents. Logothetis became CEO of his family’s shipping company at the age of 19 and has presided over its growth and global expansion into aviation, real estate, hospitality, energy and a portfolio of diversified investments. Libra’s numerous educational and philanthropic initiatives include the Libra Internship Program, which supports more than 100 young people each year, including MDC students.

Also presenting as part of the series was Eliam Medina, co-founder and CEO of Willing, an online service that provides legal forms and information, and which has been funded by some of the best technology investors in the world. The company was ranked as the fastest-growing startup of the summer by Mattermark and has been featured by publications including Wired, TechCrunch and Business Insider.
