Miami Dade College recently received the 2016 Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIE) Institutional Award from the Diversity Abroad Network for its outstanding achievements in study abroad programs.

“This award not only encourages us to meet our responsibility to expand access to international education opportunities for our students, it also supports our strategic resolution to build a globally competent workforce,” said Tatiana Mackliff, executive director of International Education at MDC.

While recognizing that MDC leads the national conversation on diversity, the EDIE Award also acknowledges that MDC continues developing international programs to bridge the gap between the abstract benefits of studying abroad and the concrete workforce demands of the local community. In a strategic effort to prepare students for global top jobs, the Office of International Education works with academic departments across MDC to create skills-based study abroad options that prepare students for careers in Miami’s strongest industries, including hospitality, tourism, culinary arts, medical services, animation and game design.

Despite MDC’s unique student demographics — with 90 percent minorities, 39 percent below the federal poverty level, and 51 percent first-generation college students — the Office of International Education has experienced unprecedented growth in study abroad programs. The number of students applying for traditional international programs quadrupled in 2015-2016, and faculty-led programs are predicted to double by summer 2017.

Currently, the Office of International Education offers more than 100 study abroad options and continues to create new partnerships. These include: short-term, faculty-led programs; short- and long-term exchanges with foreign institutions; and multiple scholarships supporting low-income students. Continuously bringing the world to Miami and Miami to the world, the Office of International Education equips students with an international perspective that makes them civically engaged and globally competitive.
