History: Miami Dade College's North Campus theater presented its first season in 1960 in the old Northside Shopping Center under the direction of Sylvia Furlong of Miami Senior High. In 1961-1962 a nearby barn on a former pig farm housed classes, rehearsals, and the scene shop--hence the Pen Players. (Richard Janaro and Art Chassman, the new theater faculty, wisely left off the "pig".) In 1962-1963 the college moved to the Opa-Locka Naval Air Station--now North Campus, and the theater occupied a former parachute loft. The next season saw them in the base fire station south of the campus--now the maintenance building.

Believing that it is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission, on a quiet weekend, the theater staff and students painted the building red with white trim like a barn theater. Monday was not quiet when the Administration saw what had been done. By then, it was too late and the show "had to go on". The Theater Department has maintained a solid reputation for quality productions every since.
