Opening the World to his Students

Dr. Michael J. Lenaghan may be in demand around the world for his internationally recognized scholarship in the social sciences, but the North campus of Miami Dade College is the place he choosesDr. Michael J. Lenaghan to call home.

A former Fulbright fellow who has traveled much of the world in his quest to understand the social sciences, Dr. Mike (as he is affectionately known on campus) has dedicated much of his career to opening up new opportunities for students and showing them how to succeed.

Dr. Mike is the Mardee Jenrette Endowed Teaching Chair at Miami Dade College where he teaches within the social sciences department and The Honors College in courses that range from social environment to leadership. He also is an adviser to MDC’s Collegewide Model United Nations Delegation (the team competes yearly at the United Nations in New York City), Pan African Student Association, Service for Peace, and Student Government.

In 2005, Dr. Mike was awarded two prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities “Landmarks in American History” Fellowships. He is also a board member of the Institute for Alternative Futures, Florida Political Science Association, Asociacion de las Naciones Unidas de la Republica Dominicana and Miami Council for International Visitors.

Before joining Miami Dade, Dr. Mike earned degrees from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Graduate School of Government and Virginia Tech’s College of Education. He also completed postgraduate work at Avinashilingam Deemed University, Brigham Young University, Florida State University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Rand Afrikaans University, Universidad de las Americas, University of Miami, University of Michigan, and University College of Galway.

At the international level, Dr. Mike currently serves on the boards of American Nicaraguan Foundation, Institute for Alternative Futures, and Service for Peace, and is external adviser to Asociacion de las Naciones Unidas de la Republica Dominicana, Human Services Coalition of Dade County, and Tiempos del Mundo. He is also a peace ambassador, Interreligious International Federation for World Peace, and an external adjudicator at two universities in India.
