Introduction
to Service Learning
Workshop Type: Professional Development
Category: Curriculum Development
Duration: 1.5 hours
Description:
Participants in this workshop will learn how to have students realize
some of the learning objectives of their course with the addition of
a service-learning component. Participants
will learn what service-learning is and how they can utilize this academically
rigorous and innovative teaching strategy to enhance classroom learning,
meet community needs, and foster civic responsibility. Distinctions
between volunteerism and service-learning will also be explored and participants
will learn the steps required to integrate service-learning into their
curriculum. Faculty will
also learn how the staff of the College's Center for Community Involvement
can support them.
Objectives:
Distinguish between volunteerism and service-learning.
Identify the three primary goals of service-learning.
Define reflection and its role in service-learning, and name at least
two reflection techniques applicable to the college classroom.
Describe the legal implications of service-learning.
Understand how to select a service experience, reflection techniques,
and assessment methods appropriate for their course.

Service Learning Into the Curriculum

Description: This
workshop will enable faculty to design a service-learning component to
use in a course which includes assessment of this unit.
Objectives:
As a result of successful completion of this
workshop participants will:
1. Design a service-learning component applicable to their learning
objectives within a given course.
2. Determine which types of academic (reflective) assignments will
be used.
3. Understand how to help students gain a better understanding
of civic responsibility.
4. Utilize a method of assessment appropriate to their module and
its learning objectives.

Reflection and Service-Learning
Workshop Type: Professional Development

Description:
Reflection is the key to helping students learn course content in
service-learning. Participants in this workshop will explore the concept of
reflection and learn how to use reflection to help students meet course
learning objectives. Participants
will discover how to integrate reflection and reflection activities into
the service-learning component of their course(s) to ensure that learning
occurs.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Understand that reflection is one of the major features in
distinguishing volunteerism from service-learning.
2. Determine which types of reflective assignments are appropriate
for their course and learning objectives.
3. Design a service-learning component applicable to their course
learning objectives utilizing one or more
methods of reflection appropriate to the module.

Description:
Participants in this workshop will explore how to assess students' mastery
of course learning objectives when participating in service-learning. A
variety of assessment techniques will be studied and a course design
with emphasis on assessment of the service-learning component will also
be developed.

1. Determine the array of assessment techniques in the service-learning
process.
2. Understand what components are needed for students to connect
their service experience
with course learning objectives.
3. Utilize a method of assessment appropriate to their module
and its learning objectives.

Incorporating
Civic Responsibility Into the Curriculum
Workshop Type: Professional Development

Duration: 2 hours
Description:
Although one of the fundamental purposes of education is to prepare
students for effective participation in a diverse democratic society,
the vast majority of our students leave unprepared for this task. Service-learning
is a teaching strategy that not only aims to enhance classroom learning
and help the community, but also helps foster civic responsibility. This
workshop will examine the role and obligation of higher education to
produce good citizens. Participants
will examine the concept of civic responsibility and explore a variety
of techniques to help improve civic education.
Objectives:
As a result of successful completion of this workshop, participants
will be able to:
1. Define
civic responsibility and understand its importance in higher education.
2. Integrate
a civic responsibility component into their curriculum.
3. Utilize
a variety of reflection techniques that foster civic responsibility.

Advanced
issues in Service - Learning for experienced practitioners
Workshop Type: Professional Development

Duration: 3 hours
Description:
Participants in this workshop will learn how to have students realize
some of the learning objectives of their course by learning ways to integrate
the more advanced issues of the service-learning experience into the
syllabus. A course design
integrating reflection techniques and new service-learning initiatives
will be developed. Participants will also learn which methods of assessment are
appropriate for reflection activities.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Design a service-learning component applicable to their learning
objectives within a given
course.
2. Determine which types of reflection assignments will be used.
3. Understand how to help students gain a better understanding
of civic responsibility.
4. Utilize
a method of assessment for the reflection activities and service-learning evaluation criteria
as they relate to the course objectives.
Evaluation:

Incorporating Project Citizen Into
the Curriculum
Workshop Type: Professional Development
Category: Curriculum Development
Duration: 6 hours (two 3-hour
sessions)
Description:
Project Citizen is a portfolio-based civic education program which
utilizes service-learning and is conducive to most curriculum. The purpose
of Project Citizen is to foster critical thinking and citizenship skills
in our students which is one of the fundamental goals of service-learning. Participants
in this workshop will learn ways to integrate the program into the curriculum
for their courses. Participants
will learn how these projects enable students to: identify
a community problem, gather the information, examine solutions, and develop
public policy, and implement an action plan. They
will also develop a Project Citizen component and an assessment tool
for their own classes.
Objectives:
As a result of successful completion of this workshop, participants
will be able to:
1. Incorporate
a Project Citizen component applicable to their learning objectives into
a course.
2. Understand
the importance of the process involved in developing public policy as
it relates to
the Project Citizen program.
3. Discover
as a group the definition of “public policy.”
4. Determine
ways to foster civic responsibility through the Project Citizen program.
5. Create
a Project Citizen portfolio based on a local issue utilizing the criteria
of the program.
6. Assess
the success of a Project Citizen portfolio.
Evaluation:
1. I
can incorporate a Project Citizen component that is applicable to the
learning objectives for my course.
