Eight Selected in MLB Draft
Eight MDC baseball players were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, the largest number from any school in the NJCAA.
Leading the march for MDC is pitcher Eric Fornataro, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., who turned down scholarships from the University of Miami and Louisiana State University to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Also selected were catcher Karim Turkamani, signing with Toronto, and right-handed pitcher Clayton Suss, chosen by Arizona.
Other drafted players include centerfielder Chris Curran who just signed with Washington; infielder Carmelo Jaime; outfielder Danny Rodríguez (to Arizona); pitcher Reynaldo Cotilla (to Kansas City); and pitcher Marcus Salmon (to Milwaukee). Former MDC pitcher Elih Villanueva, a junior at Florida State University, was selected by the Florida Marlins.
These recruits are following in the footsteps of MDC Hall of Famer Bucky Dent, and fellow alumni Plácido Polanco and Mike Piazza, just to name a few.
