Springing into Art
The renewing energy of spring is palpable at Miami Dade College’s Art Gallery System (AGS) as it presents another exciting lineup of exhibitions for South Florida’s art lovers.
Interdisciplinary collaborations highlight the season with a confluence of exhibitions, film screenings and lectures that offer a complete, deep and multidimensional analysis of subject matter.
MDC’s Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) screening of the documentary Unfinished Spaces goes hand-in-hand with AGS’s Utopia Posible, an exhibition of photographs of the unfinished structures of Cuba's National Art Schools by alumnus Felipe Dulzaides at the historic Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College. The exhibition was complemented with a talk by Roberto Gottardi, one of the architects who designed the structures, in collaboration with the University of Miami.
Also at the Freedom Tower, invasion invasión l’invasion presents the hard-hitting work of French-Nicaraguan painter Jean Marc Calvet, whose fascinating and unusual path to art is the subject of the documentary Calvet, presented at MIFF. As if that weren’t enough to bring the artwork to life, Calvet himself opened the exhibition with an artist talk.
Focus on CINTAS
The CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection, stewarded by AGS, now enjoys constant exposure with rotating exhibitions in its own dedicated gallery space at the Freedom Tower. This season, painting, film and photography selections get the spotlight in Minimum/Maximum and SHUTTER, reflecting the variety of visual arts disciplines supported by the foundation.
The work of talented MDC students gets its share of the limelight at AGS’s campus galleries and art spaces with the 2012 Emerging Artists and annual juried League for Innovation exhibitions.
Students had a leading role in Wolfson Campus’ Gender Bender, which they curated from works in the Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Study Centre, while MDC faculty headed the spring lineup at North Campus with Not for Sale, works by MDC faculty members Alena Fresquet and Víctor Gómez.
A peek at AGS’s summer offerings: Emergence & Structure: Nature in Process visually explores concepts of scientific theory, while Embedded: A Photojournalist Captures Conflict and Resistance reveals images of conflict, war, duty and unyielding patriotism by Jim Nickless.
