Hollywood, Here We Come!
The glitz and glamor of the fast-paced entertainment industry came to life on Oct. 11 as everyone who walked down the red carpet and crossed the threshold of the College’s new state-of-the-art recording studio at North Campus discovered the star within themselves.
“Scores of people had the chance to be their own ‘MDC Idol’ during the grand opening of our new facilities,” said North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente.
Housed at MDC’s acclaimed School of Entertainment & Design Technology (SEDT), the College’s new studio features the latest equipment and technology, rivaling top-of-the-line professional studios in the region and even those in Hollywood, Calif. MDC students have access to a sound recording studio that features the SSL Duality Console; a music ensemble recording space with three sound isolation booths for vocal and instrumental recording; two master control rooms; a Foley stage for creating sound effects for film and television production; a motion picture screening room; a high-definition television studio; and a post-production editing suite, among other outstanding facilities.
Ahead of the Curve
“Miami Dade College is a direct pipeline into the South Florida entertainment industry because of the exceptional training and opportunities we provide our students,” said SEDT Director Barry Gordon. “With this new studio, now more than ever our students are working with the most up-to-date equipment and mastering industry standards and practices so that they can immediately enter the workforce.
“In addition, Miami Dade College’s four-year baccalaureate degree program in Film, Television & Digital Production gives graduates the hands-on, real-world education they need to succeed in this high-powered, highly competitive field,” Gordon said.
Ready for the Silver Screen
As part of the MDC production studios initiative, the sound recording studio is just one of many new and upgraded facilities that make up the film and television production and music business programs at the College.
Adding another layer of sophistication to the new facilities, a high-tech educational observation lounge and a 185-seat motion picture screening room with high-definition digital projection and a 5.1 Dolby Surround-Sound system enable both students and professors to share their work with a larger audience.
Besides these features, the College’s television studio offers high-definition recording and green screen technologies for CGI (computer-generated imagery) production.
“Once again, Miami Dade College is leading the way to train students with the skills they need to be the next generation of media producers,” Vicente said. “Despite the economic downturn, the entertainment industry in South Florida is booming, and SEDT’s degree programs will ensure that there is a skilled workforce to fill the industry’s needs.”
