Making Their Mark


MDC Literary Magazines Dominate Competitions

Miami Dade College’s student literary magazines have been recognized on the local, state and national levels for the talent and vision of the students who produce these outstanding creative publications.

The Florida College System Press Association presented awards during its annual conference to five MDC publications, including: Axis (North Campus), Café Cultura (Hialeah Campus), Metromorphosis (Wolfson Campus), Miambiance (Kendall Campus) and Urbana (InterAmerican Campus).

Café Cultura was awarded first place for General Excellence in Division A for the fifth year in a row, while in Division B, Miambiance took first place and Axis placed third. A number of first, second and third-place finishes were awarded in various categories, with Axis garnering awards for design, cover, staff page and table of contents; Café Cultura placing in the top two for fiction, editing, poetry, staff page, contents page, artworks, individual art and nonfiction; Metromorphosis winning awards for poem, two-page spread, cover and poetry; Miambiance receiving honors for poetry, photography, art works, fiction, nonfiction, photo, individual and poem; and Urbana taking home awards for poem and art.

Café Cultura and Miambiance also took home awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Awards. Café Cultura placed second in three categories, including photography portfolio, literary portfolio, and illustration. It also took third place honors in the poem category. Miambiance received several Circle Merit awards in the categories of traditional fiction and hand-drawn illustration.

Miambiance also won big in the Community College Humanities Association Literary Competition’s Southern Division, taking first place in the literary magazine competition and winning eight other awards for its stellar content.
