Alum Earns Cornell’s Top Award

MDC alumnus Andy Alfonso, left, was named a Merrill Presidential Scholar, Cornell’s highest recognition. Sharing the great news is Dr. Rosany Alvarez, his MDC professor and mentor.

Miami Dade College alumnus Andy Alfonso continues his impressive streak of accomplishments with his selection as a Merrill Presidential Scholar, the highest recognition given by Cornell University to a graduating senior. Alfonso recently completed a bachelor’s degree in literature at Cornell, after completing his degree at MDC.

During his time at MDC, Alfonso received the coveted Board of Trustees Scholarship and the President’s Volunteer Service Award for tutoring his peers in math, chemistry, physics and English.

He also served as president of the National Society of Leadership and Success and vice president of Leadership and Scholarships in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Alfonso

has been accepted to Princeton University where he plans to pursue a doctorate in literature.
