To be eligible for admission to the program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, you must meet the following criteria:

• You hold, or will hold, at the time of enrollment in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED).
• You have applied to and been fully accepted by Miami Dade College. (For application information, see the Miami Dade College Catalog, available from admissions and registration offices on any campus.
• You are a graduate of a two-year accredited Allied Health or Nursing program (that included Algebra and English) that is patient-care oriented, OR have completed, with a C grade or better, the following prerequisite courses:

• You have completed the core courses HSC 0003 Introduction to Health Care including CPR and HIV/Aids.
• You have earned a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (3.0 preferred) on a scale of 4.0 for the pre-requisite courses.
• You have successfully completed, as a condition for final acceptance, a physical examination that includes evaluation of your ability to meet the technical standards, proof that you have the required immunizations, and completion of the Hepatitis B vaccine series or waiver.
• You have satisfied the College Computer Competency requirements

SELECTION PROCESS:

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  February 15 for August (Fall) start each year

The program selects a new class each spring for a fall start.  25 students are admitted each year for the 6 semester, 66 credit program. 

Because there may be a greater number of qualified applicants for the DMS program than can be accommodated, program personnel have established selection criteria.  Once applicants have met the basic admission requirements of submitting an application and transcripts, they will be given priority for admission according to the following:

Students with the highest GPA on the general education required science and math courses listed above will be awarded extra credit points on a sliding scale from 4.0 to 3.0

Beginning in the spring of 2009, students will be awarded points based on their writing skills

Students that have completed all required program general education courses listed above, including HSC 0003, will be considered first

The process above is followed in evaluating each applicant until the class is filled.  A back-up list is formulated through the process in the event that slots will need to be filled due to accepted students declining admission.  Students will not be admitted once the fall semester has begun.

Miami Dade county applicants with all of the non-DMS general education courses completed and with the highest GPA in these courses will be given first priority.
