  • You have attended one Midwifery Program information session at the Medical Center Campus. The information sessions will help you explore your interest in midwifery and decide if becoming a Licensed Midwife will best help you meet your professional career goals. The information sessions will be held Monday evenings 6pm-8pm in Spring Semester through April 23, 2007 and on Thursday mornings 10am- noon during summer A and B (May 10-July 26, 2007). in Room 1330-E. Alternative arrangements can be made for those living in another geographic area.

If you require assistance, contact the Program Coordinator, Justine Clegg, at 305-237-4234 or Diann Gregory at 305-237-4460. Applicants must submit an essay on “Why I Want to be a Licensed Midwife” before the application deadline.

  • You should schedule an appointment with an advisor at the New Student Center Advisement, 305-237-4141 in order to take the College Placement Test (CPT) through Testing Services, Room 1303, Medical Center Campus, 305-237-4275, or through Testing Services at any MDC Campus. After getting your CPT results, if you have not qualified for college level math, then you must complete at least MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra). If you have an Associate in Arts Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university within the United States and are applying to the Midwifery Program, you will be exempted from General Education courses.
  • After completing any needed remedial courses based on your CPT results, you will need to complete the following required General Education and Natural Sciences courses:

General Education Courses

  • ENC 1101
  • PHI 2604 (Humanities requirement for students who matriculated 1998-1 or later)
  • SPC 1026
  • CLP 1006
  • HUN 1201
  • CGS 1060 or CCT Test (call Testing Services for info)

Natural Science Courses

  • CHM 1033
  • BSC 2085/ 2085L (completed within 10 years of desired date of entry)
  • BSC 2086/ 2086L (completed within 10 years of desired date of entry)
  • MCB 2013/ 2013L

Note: If you have been continuously enrolled at Miami Dade College since before August 1998, the following General Education courses can be considered: HUM 1020, ISS 1120, ISS 1161 for PHI 2604, PPE 1005, and SPC 1026.If you have an Associate in Arts degree or higher, your General Education courses will be waived.

  • At this point, you are eligible to submit a program application to the Midwifery program even if you have not yet completed the following courses: PHI 2604, PPE 1005, SPC 1026, MCB 2013/2013L, HUN 1201 and CGS 1060. Although those courses can be taken along with Midwifery courses, we strongly recommend that you complete the remaining general education and natural science courses, especially Microbiology and Microbiology Lab (MCB 2013 and MCB 2013L), before admission to the Midwifery program. Midwifery Program courses are difficult. An academic overload can place a heavy burden on you. Natural Science courses provide a foundation of knowledge for the midwifery courses, which build on a scientific knowledge base. If you have not completed a prerequisite course, you will be working with a knowledge deficit which may make it difficult to fully appreciate or understand the Midwifery course content. A student who completes all required courses and arranges a strong personal support system before entering the Midwifery Program will have the best chance of succeeding in the program. Campus resources such as the library and Student Success Center are available to help you. Adequate personal support, good study skills and use of college resources are especially important if you take additional courses along with Midwifery Program courses.

Application for Midwifery program selection to the School of Nursing should include: your MDC degree audit, a receipt of a one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee from the Bursar Office. Applications must be received by May 1 st for August admissions at the New Student Center Advisement. Application deadlines will be waived for Fall 2007.

Selection Criteria

Students will be selected until the class is filled, with the first priority given to those who have completed all general education and natural science courses, followed by those who will complete these courses (34 credits total) by the end of the summer semester. Those who will have completed the most credits will be admitted first. If two applicants have completed the same number of credits, selection will be based upon date of application. If you are enrolled in a course at the time of selection, you will be provisionally accepted pending completion of the course with a grade of C or better. The number of seats is limited, based on the availability of clinical experiences. Students who apply after May 1 st will be considered if seats are available.

If space is available, any students who apply after May 1 st who has completed pre-requisites will be considered once they have completed the application process and will be selected according to the above criteria.
