Medical Assisting

This 1 year (3 semester)* program prepares individuals to provide allied health services in ambulatory out-patient facilities, including medical offices and clinics. Medical Assistants participate in Diagnostic, Clinical, and Administrative functions. Diagnostic functions include drawing blood, performing basic laboratory tests, and taking EKG's and X-Rays. Clinical functions include obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for and assisting with examinations and procedures, administering medications and performing treatments. Administrative functions include serving as receptionist, scheduling appointments and diagnostic procedures, managing records, completing insurance coding, and providing for billing and collecting. Medical Assistants use computer technology to manage records, billing and other aspects of a medical office or clinic. Students participate in an externship each semester to gain experience in every aspect of the Medical Assistant's practice

* Students can choose to attend part-time and extend the length of the program to 2 years

Special Information

Program students are required to provide the results off a physical examination, immunizations for rubella (German measles), Varicella (chicken pox), and Hepatitis B (or declination) and the results of a test for tuberculosis (TB) prior to beginning externship experiences. Students must have their own transportation to externship sites in the community.

Due to the limited number of students that can be accepted into the Medical Assisting program, it is important that applicants be properly informed.  For information, advisement, application forms, selection criteria and deadline dates, interested students should contact the New Student Center on the Medical Campus.

The Medical Assistant graduate may, after receiving their certificate from MDC, take the following examinations for certification:

 1.  RMA (Registered Medical Assistant)

2.  Pharmacy Technician

3.  Basic X-Ray Technician

4.  Phlebotomy Technician

5.  EKG Technician

 They can also apply for the Transitional Nursing Program at MDC after meeting all their pre-requisites.



Eligibility Criteria

  1. Proof of High School diploma or GED

  2. Provisional acceptance to MDC

  3. Completion of  Tests for Adult Basic Education (TABE)

Interested individuals must be provisionally accepted to the College. They should hold a high school diploma or GED certificate and score minimum of 8.0 on all parts (math, English, language, and reading) of the TABE prior to enrolling in program courses. Students must score 10.0 on all parts of the TABE before graduating.

Call (305) 237-4141 for questions and/or advisement on Medical Assisting. Students scoring below 8.0 on the TABE are encouraged to take HSC 0001 while they prepare to repeat the TABE. students are expected to have the ability to develop the interpersonal, cognitive, and psychomotor skills needed to perform the required activities of a Medical Assistant.
