WEB SITE: http://www.educatetomorrow.org
DESCRIPTION: Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international not for profit certified 501(c)3. We believe that the education is critical to a healthy society. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness. Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning. Based in Miami, Florida, Educate Tomorrow supports youth between the ages of 14-23, who are aging out of the foster care system, by matching them with mentors. These mentors in turn help the young people to enroll in college and training programs, find housing and jobs, as well as apply for educational and social assistance that may be available to them. The organization currently has 70 volunteers and is endeavoring to match an additional 120 students with community mentors during the next year.
OPPORTUNITIES: Recruitment Campaign (Strategic marketing): These individuals assist in creating a marketing campaign to attract mentors from diverse backgrounds and identify the Educate Tomorrow Mentor Miami program within Miami and Florida community. Event Planning/Community Outreach: These individuals assist in research and design of quarterly activities for Educate Tomorrow mentors and mentees including, but not limited to: community involvement (i.e. habitat for humanity.), group and individual match activities (i.e. boat chartering), educational opportunities (i.e. college tours), and in-house informational sessions. Administrative: These individuals assist with daily administrative duties such as: assembling press packets, filing, follow-up with mentors and mentees as to their current needs and status, and grant research. Duties shift with program needs. Event Logistics/Fundraising: These individuals participate in various fundraising events hosted by Educate Tomorrow. Duties include, but are not limited to: Sponsorship solicitation, market-piece design, silent-auction donations solicitation, venue and service provider solicitation, day-of involvement, and event design. Grant Research/ Writing: These individuals would function in two areas: (1) Researching grants applicable to Educate Tomorrow and drafting grant proposals (2) Design of an on-going program and relevant grant proposal for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to be facilitated by Miami Dade College Honors students. This project requires submitting a grant proposal directly related to the Latino community to the Gate Foundation. If awarded, volunteers will then implement the program and create a strategic plan outline for future volunteers. These opportunities are ideal for an individual who is highly motivated, creative, and able to work on projects with minimal involvement from program staff. Any work associated with the program will serve as portfolio/reference pieces for volunteers. Educate Tomorrow welcomes both short-term and long term involvement and will ‘interview’ potential volunteers to assure suitability. Tutoring Tutor one-on-one with youth facing academic challenges, seeking their GED, or working toward graduation.

DESCRIPTION: His House Children’s Home is a private, non-profit, faith-based organization dedicated to restoring the joy in the lives of children from newborn to 18 years of age, and those who have transitioned out of the foster care system. Established in 1989, the organization provides residential care for abused, neglected and drug-exposed children in a home-like setting. The agency is licensed by the Florida Department of Children & Families, contracted by Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe, Inc. and in Broward County ChildNet, Inc. as a residential program and child-placement agency. As such, the organization is a frontline provider of residential services when an abused child comes into a foster care system. Recognized and accredited by the national Council on Accreditation (COA), its model is unlike other residential programs. Each of the homes is occupied by six to twelve children and staffed with loving house parents and supportive caregivers. They make every effort to create a beautiful, cozy and safe haven where there is family unity and comfort. His House is committed to breaking the cycle of abuse, while meeting the emotional, medical, educational and social needs of the child. The organization provides programs and services ranging from residential care, foster and adoption placement, case-management, in-house counseling, the His House Academy, tutoring, in addition to weekly enrichment activities such as art, music, athletics, drama and music production. Since its inception, His House has restored the joy in the lives of over 4,500 children. In 2008, the agency opened the His House International program, providing residential care and case management to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) from the Central American countries varying from Guatemala and Mexico to other countries of the world. The agency was also selected as the United States reception center to receive and care for orphan children of Haiti. Abused children need a place to call home during this turbulent time in their lives. His House Children’s Home is a healing place that gives wounded children a warm, loving home and renewed hope for a brighter future. Its model is unlike your typical residential program. The home is staffed with house parents and supporting caregivers. Each house provides a home for ten to twelve children. It is the goal of His House to give each cottage a family-feel and make the home as cozy and home-like, as possible. Abused children need a place to call home during this turbulent time in their lives. His House Children’s Home is a healing place giving wounded children a warm, loving home and renewed hope for a brighter future. I HAVE A DREAM FOUNDATION OF MIAMI, INC., (Hibiscus Elementary School)Hibiscus Elementary School 18701 Northwest 1st Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL 33169

CONTACT: Glenn Howard, Service Learning Coordinator (703) 231-1357; Jonas Severe, Program Coordinator (305) 491-0118; E-mail: ghoward552000@yahoo.com;micahrwhitley@gmail.com; ihaveadreamfl@gmail.com
WEB SITE: http://www.ihaveadreamfoundationmiami.com/index.html
DESCRIPTION: The I Have a Dream program was launched in 1981, when founder Eugene Lang returned to his alma mater, PS. 121 in East Harlem, to address the graduating sixth grade class. When he learned that three-quarters of the school’s students would probably drop out of school, Lang promised college tuition to every sixth grader who graduated from high school. The results were truly amazing, 90% of those sixth graders graduated from high school, and 60% went to college. This remarkable accomplishment led to the creation of the I Have a Dream Foundation, which consists of 35 affiliates across the United Sates, and one in New Zealand. Within those 35 affiliates, there are 65 current cohorts serving more than 4,000 Dreamers in 30 U.S. cities. The Miami chapter was founded in 1995 by the Trump Family. The foundation adopted the entire second grade class (97 Dreamers) at the Charles R. Drew School in Liberty City. 95 Dreamers reached the twelfth grade, 83 of them graduated in 2005 on time and 72 are currently in college. In a community where the average income is $11,000, 1 out of 4 children is arrested by the age of 16, teenage pregnancy is prevalent and the graduation rate of less than 25%, the “ I Have a Dream” Miami program has helped defy these odds. These Dreamers have proven that just because one is born into poverty, does not mean that one cannot succeed, if only given the opportunity. In 2007, the Trumps launched a new cohort of Dreamers at Hibiscus Elementary School in Miami Gardens. Now in the second grade, the 100+ Hibiscus Dreamers receive academic support during the school day as well as a comprehensive after school program that provides homework and tutoring, art, music, dance, chess and a science-based gardening curriculum.
OPPORTUNITIES: We welcome service-learning students who are interested in tutoring, homework assistance, assisting in the delivery of the music, art and/or dance programs, physical education and or course help in the garden! We can also provide a hands-on experience in the inner workings of a non-profit organization. Students who are bilingual in English/Haitian Kreyol can assist us in communication with our parents, many of whom are not fully literate in English.
HOURS NEEDED: MTWRF56
COMMENTS: Our after school program is from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. During school there are opportunities for tutoring and academic assistance from 10:00am until 3:00pm.

Since that time, the IRC has been a source of relief, hope, and renewal for millions of people around the globe in countries such as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq and Afghanistan. At the outbreak of an emergency, we provide sanctuary and lifesaving assistance - rapidly delivering critical medical and public health services, shelter and food. Since then, the Miami office has resettled tens of thousands of refugees from countries as diverse as Cuba, Iraq, Burma, Vietnam, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile, Bosnia, Haiti, Sudan, Iran and Kosovo. ORLOWITZ-LEE CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER/KRISTI HOUSE, INC., 1265 NW 12th Av., Miami, FL 33136

CONTACT: Dawn Thompson, Assistant Executive Director 305-547-6834; Trudy Novicki, Executive Director ; Fax: (305) 547-6837; E-mail: dthompson@kristihouse ; afuente@kristihouse.org;
WEB SITE: http://www.kristihouse.org
DESCRIPTION: Kristi House provides a healing environment for all child victims of sexual abuse and their families, regardless of income, through prevention, treatment and coordination of services with our community partners. As Kristi House continues to grow, so too does the need for dedicated volunteers. Children visiting the Center range in age from 3-18 years old. Volunteers play a vital role in creating a safe environment for children to receive services. Waiting Room Volunteers – “Ambassadors” Volunteers play an important role in putting children at ease and encouraging them to return to the Center for therapy and other appointments. Children arriving often must wait while their parents or family members are attending appointments. While waiting, children are greeted by volunteers who provide structured activities to engage them and lessen their anxiety while in the playroom/waiting area. Other Volunteer Opportunities Speakers Bureau For those who like to get out into the community, the Speakers Bureau is ideal and an excellent forum for Kristi House’s message to be spread. This program includes training sessions from our educational staff on the signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse. The training includes one three-hour session and one two-hour session to prepare the volunteer for community presentations. This is a great program for people who are comfortable with public speaking. We provide you with the tools, statistics and background you need for your own personal knowledge and to spread the word. Special Events Volunteers help with a variety of different duties before and during special annual events, such as preparing the materials, picking up donations and making deliveries, organizing the day of the event, registration of guests, preparing displays, welcoming guests, etc. The Kristi House Touch a Heart Dinner and Auction, Kristi House’s signature fundraising event, is a popular volunteer assignment for those who want to participate in a high-end event catering to discerning and committed donors. Other Ideas for Companies and Organizations A number of companies have conducted toy drives at the holidays so that at our annual client holiday party in December, every child receives a new toy or gift (for teens, gift cards are perfect). For this memorable annual event, we are always in need of donors to help with underwriting or obtaining food, new toys or entertainment for the event, as well as to help host it on the big night (18 and older). Companies have sponsored their own paid “Casual Day,” where staff pays say a set amount for the privilege of coming in cas for the day. The total amount raised is donated in the name of the company to Kristi House. Another popular way for companies to help Kristi House families directly is through the donation of tickets to sporting events, theater or other special events that are family oriented. A night at the ballet or a day at the zoo means a lot to children whose families have so little extra to do activities many other families take for granted. A project that would really help our kids in August is preparing them for back to school. Office Depot donates back packs to us but they are empty. Our kids need notebooks and other supplies as well as school uniforms. You could organize a drive to stuff the backpacks with all sorts of back-to-school goodies. Organize fundraisers benefiting Kristi House.
OPPORTUNITIES: Special events and fundraising opportunities.
HOURS NEEDED: MTWRF2345
COMMENTS: Hours: Hours for volunteering are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Volunteers can select their own hours according to their schedule. We would like a three-month commitment. Students will be interviewed by phone, followed by a personal interview at Kristi House. An orientation will be scheduled at a time that is appropriate for each student. Background checks and fingerprints are required for all volunteers. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.

URBAN PARADISE GUILD, sam@urban-paradise.org, Miami, FL

CONTACT: Sam Van Leer, Executive Director & Founder 305-758-5119; , ; E-mail: sam@urban-paradise.org
WEB SITE: http://www.urban-paradise.org
DESCRIPTION: Urban Paradise Guild (UPG) is unlike most agencies offering Service-Learning. Different can be good. MDC Students chose UPG as the MDC Community Partner of the Year for Academic 2009. You can get involved on multiple levels, doing many different things, and your family is welcome at most activities. UPG is on a mission: "Creating Sustainable Paradise in South Florida, One Habitat at a time." This means that everything we do is aimed at making the world we live in a better place, both for humans and for wildlife. UPG creates new habitat where human development has wiped out natural areas (or threatens to do it). We operate nurseries at multiple locations growing Native plants and trees for our Projects, and sometimes Fruit Trees for low-income neighborhoods. We fight Global Climate Change every day through our work, protecting South Florida from the causes and often the effects of Sea-Level Rise. Everything UPG does is Volunteer-Powered. Whether you come out for a few hours or make an Internship Commitment, the time you invest in healing our damaged ecosystems will be time well spent. Whether you Volunteer alone, with friends, family or with an organization or Student Government, you will know that your work has impact on the problems our community faces. Habitat-building is real work, and you will get a real workout. Unlike visiting a gym or running, ** This workout counts 3X. ** 1. Provides you with a cross-training workout that is always different. 2. Heals environmental damage, provides habitat and food for wildlife or people. 3. Protects the future of our community from Sea-Level Rise. Your help makes Miami-Dade a better place to live, with safer coastlines, better fishing, cleaner air, better meals and nutrition, improved access for recreation, and natural beauty everywhere. Birds and butterflies will be everywhere.
OPPORTUNITIES: All members of the Urban Paradise Guild are ENVIRONMENTAL HEALERS who do habitat work, such as planting butterfly gardens and mangroves, removing harmful invasive plants and trees, or transplanting in the Nurseries. We get a workout, too! In Fall 2010 we will begin to add Urban Gardening and Composting as more Locations become available. OVERVIEW There are 4 tracks for Service-Learners: 1. S-L Volunteer: come out individually to a UPG activity (friends & family usually are welcome) for a few hours. 2. Organizational S-L Volunteers: Come out as a group. No long-term commitment is needed, but groups must schedule in advance (to avoid over-booking). 3. Organizational S-L Projects: A group makes a commitment to a UPG Project. Duration is by agreement. UPG provides training, support and leadership. 4. S-L Intern: Become a core member of UPG's specialists and leaders providing critical functions to the group. Build your resume in fields relating to your major. LOCATIONS & CHAPTERS UPG has 7 areas, and there is probably one near you! UPG makes a lasting impact through Location Adoption of Parks. We get to know an area, and attack its problems systematically. Residential Chapters include Urban Gardening and Fruit Trees in their work. * Oleta River State Park (NE 167 St - North Miami) http://www.urban-paradise.org/Oleta * Matheson Hammock M-D County Park (Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables) http://www.urban-paradise.org/Matheson * Village of El Portal (NE 87 St - El Portal) * Liberty City (at our Partner's facility: Miami Workers Center, NW 7 Ave just south of 62 St). * Hialeah (Location under consideration) * Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (Commitment required) * Montgomery Botanical Center (Help fill the nursery!) TRACKS: Most students start out with a minimum commitment. If they like UPG, they do more. Commitments vary from a few hours to a year or more. 1. S-L Volunteer: come out individually to a UPG activity (friends & family usually are welcome) for a few hours. Check the UPG Calendar for opportunities. Do something nice for mother nature, get credit for your hours. No long-term commitment is needed, but please RSVP. 2. Organizational S-L Volunteers: Come out as a group. No long-term commitment is needed, but groups must schedule in advance (to avoid over-booking). Activities may be part of the UPG Calendar, or specially scheduled for the group. Groups often bring a picnic or BBQ. Depending on the Location, UPG may be able to provide access to recreations such as Kayaking. 3. Organizational S-L Projects: A group makes a commitment to a UPG Project. Duration is by agreement. UPG provides training, support, leadership, project management, and of course liaison with government agencies such as Parks and environmental regulators. Our Partner organizations might operate a UPG Nursery, plant an area with Native Habitat and water it, provide Organic Stewardship, or other essential work. 4. S-L INTERNSHIPS: Become a core member of UPG's specialists and leaders providing critical functions to the group. Build your resume in fields relating to your major. UPG needs people with many Majors and aptitudes. Artists are as important as Botanists. Train to become a Team Leader, Asst. Nursery Manager, Administrator or other critical function. Build your resume in fields relating to your major. * Make an impact on your Career, while still in school. * Make an impact on problems that effect our community and the environment we live in. * Minimum commitment to UPG is 10 hours per week for 1 year. * Some hours may be done in your spare time, others require a scheduled commitment. * Qualify for a letter of recognition from the President of America for your service. Protect your families and homes by fighting pollution and habitat loss. Hours, days, and work sites depend on our schedules. We can often have specially scheduled activities for large groups. Some roles require training. All roles involve hands-on training and experience. You will learn new skills - and we hope you can teach us a thing or two.
