English & Communications Department Mission Statement
The mission of the English
and Communications Department of Miami Dade College – Kendall Campus is for each student to achieve proficiency in English in the
following areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
We prepare our students to read at the college level, to express themselves
coherently in written and oral presentations, and to analyze and understand
presentations made by others.
Through a wide variety of courses in composition, creative writing, journalism,
speech and literature, the department seeks to encourage students to live an
ethical and humane life, to explore human relationships, to think and act
creatively, and to develop the critical analytical skills that foster effective
communication in college, career and life.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Professor Zamorano immigrated to the US with her parents from pre-Castro Cuba in 1954, becoming a naturalized citizen seven years later.
After graduating with honors from Southwest Miami High School, she continued her education at the University of Miami, where she earned a BA in English and French, then began teaching as a graduate assistant while working towards an MA in English.
Professor Zamorano is a specialist in British literature of the Elizabethan Age, the Romantic Period, and the Victorian Era. Also, she has been listed in Who's Who Among American Teachers, in the 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2005 editions.
Her interests outside teaching extend to classical music and opera as well as to 19th Century European Art.
Professor Zamorano, with her colleagues Marta Magellan and Vicki Lague, respectively, helped design the following courses that are part of the College's curriculum:
LIT 2330 - Survey of Children's Literature
