This
joint venture between the math and social science departments
seeks to provide students with the academic, affective,
and technological support to pass their math courses, while
gaining a solid foundation for future graduation requirements. Tutors
will provide face-to-face group tutoring with some additional

A New Way to Provide
Relevant Information to the Faculty of High-Risk Courses |
|
|
Brad
Lawrence, Mathematics, Wolfson
blawrenc@mdc.edu
|
ABSTRACT:

|
This
research-based project is designed to establish a mechanism
for producing unique and class-specific profiles of course
sections by reference number (not of individual students). These
profiles would be provided to the faculty member at the
start of each term. They would include data about career
goals, demographics, previous academic work and performance
by comparable students in earlier sections of the same
course. It is hoped that this information document will
be a catalyst for major change in the manner in which faculty
identify student needs in the classroom and institute appropriate
change. |

Competency Based
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) |
|
|
Susan
Kass, Dental Hygiene, Medical Campus
skass@mdc.edu
Raquel Hardie,
Dental Hygiene, Medical Campus
rhardie@mdc.edu
|
ABSTRACT:

|
Faculty
will identify a series of clinical skills that students
should master by the completion of their first year of
study. They will then administer the OSCE, an objective
exam which serves as a method for assessing a multitude
of clinical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. The
OSCE format utilizes multiple stations designed to be interactive
and to test mastery of skills. This provides all students
with the same experience and with the opportunity to receive
feedback on specific skills related to client care. |

Servando
Munoz, Chemistry, Kendall Campus
smunoz@mdc.edu
|
ABSTRACT:

|
The
proposed work aims to design experiments using state-of-the-art
computer-controlled analytical instruments to expand and
strengthen the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory. These
methodologies include but are not limited to the following: Uv-vis
near infrared, fluorescence, and Fourier-transform infrared
spectrophotometry; proton nmr spectrometry, and high performance
liquid chromatography. Using automated instrumentation
will allow students to spend less time conducting routine
laboratory procedures while concentrating on developing
their analytical skills to correlate and interpret experimental
data. |
