Program Description

The Direct Entry Midwifery Program offers an Associate in
Science degree upon graduation from a comprehensive
three-year program designed for students with no previous
midwifery or nursing background. Midwifery Program graduates
are eligible to take the examination to become a Florida
Licensed Midwife. The program is approved by the Florida
Department of Health, Council of Licensed Midwifery.
Licensed Midwives are community-based practitioners who
provide comprehensive, holistic, individualized maternity
care and alternative birthing services to low risk clients.
They also serve as health care team members for at risk
pregnancies. Midwifery care is family-centered and
individualized to consider the client's unique cultural,
ethnic, psychosocial, nutritional, and educational needs and
supports healthy lifestyle habits that benefit the whole
family. Licensed Midwives have been delivering babies in
Florida since 1931. The goal of the Florida Midwifery
Resource Center is for 50% of low-risk deliveries to be
attended by midwives.
The Associate in Science Degree in Midwifery will give you
the knowledge and technical skills you need to provide safe,
independent, comprehensive maternity care to low-risk
clients in a variety of birth settings. Additionally, the
Program will teach you to provide safe prenatal and
postpartum care as part of the heath care team and to
provide maternity services to at-risk clients while
collaborating with the physician.
Supervised clinical practice providing client care is
included in your program and offers you the opportunity to
interact with individuals in a variety of maternity care
settings.
Accreditation

The Associate in Science Degree in Midwifery program is
approved by the Florida Council of Licensed Midwifery and is
accredited by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council.

Prerequisite Course Completion Policy

Students who apply to the
Midwifery program by May 1st and who have completed or will
complete by projected enrollment date the minimum required courses (see the Midwifery
Curriculum) will be listed in order of credits that have been
completed or will be completed by the end of the summer
semester. Students will be selected until the class is filled,
with the first priority given to those who have completed all
natural science courses, followed by those who will complete
these courses (34 credits total) by the end of the summer
semester. Those who will have completed the same number of
credits, selection will be based upon date of application. If
you have enrolled in a course at the time of selection, you
will be provisionally accepted pending completion of the
course with a a grade of C or better. The number of seats is
limited, based on the availability of clinical experiences.
Students who apply after May 1st will be considered if seats
are available.
If space is available, any students who apply after May 1st
will be considered once they have completed the application
process and will be selected according to the above criteria.
Taking general education and basic science courses along with
Midwifery Program courses can be challenging. Midwifery
Program courses are difficult. An academic overload can place
a heavy burden on you. Natural science courses give a good
foundation of knowledge base. If you have not completed a
prerequisite course you will be working with a knowledge
deficit which may make it difficult to fully appreciate or
understand the Midwifery course content.
A student who completes all required courses and arranges a
strong personal support system before entering the Midwifery
Program will have the best chance of succeeding in the
program. Campus resources such as the library and Student
Career Center are available to help you. Adequate personal
support, good study skills and use of college resources are
especially important if you take additional courses along with
Midwifery Program courses. Ask your Midwifery faculty promptly
for any assistance that you need.
