REPORT OF COLLEGE CASSC MEETING
Natural Science Requirement for AA – Proposed Change
The natural science requirement for the AA currently requires students to have six credits in the natural science area. Students are encouraged to select one course from the life science area and one course from the physical science area. The natural science faculty has proposed changing the requirement to requiring students to select one course from each of the natural science areas. The reason for this change is based on the rational that students should acquire as broad an educational base as possible.
Students majoring in some specialized fields would be exempt from the new rule as outlined in the College Catalog. The question was raised concerning what four year institutions require students to take in the natural science area. Susan Kah called for a show of hands on the proposal. Campus CASSC overwhelmingly recommended leaving the natural science requirement as it currently stands now.
College CASSC approved all of the proposals presented by the School of Justice and the Funeral Science Cosmetology course. John Greb did a presentation on how to access minutes on the Web. Pat Stephenson discussed goal and strategy setting. It was suggested that the curriculum and review process be streamlined. Campus CASSC discussed the need to strengthen communication since there is not a lot of overlap of individuals who sit on College CASSC and Campus CASSC. It was recommended that the College CASSC representative sit on Campus CASSC. This suggestion would strengthen communication and feedback but would take more of the representative’s time.
It was recommended that the minutes from Campus CASSC be placed on the Web.
CONTINUING EDUCATION UPDATE
Diane Loffredo updated the group on the number of health fairs that the campus has been participating in this fall. Medical Center Campus in partnership with The Family Health Center will be offering a program on The Diabetes Forum on November 4, 2000. A symposium will be offered for EMS professionals from Uruguay in November.
The Medical Center Campus Continuing Education Department is the first to offer the RN remediation course for students who have failed their RN boards three times. The Board of Nursing is now requiring students to take a remediation course after three failures. Diane Loffredo is working with the Board of Nursing to track the pass rate of the students who successfully complete the remediation course. Diane Loffredo is in the process of putting together a review for EMS.
Modifications to the Introduction to Health Care course, HSC 0001, are being considered. Parts of the course may be offered through Virtual College with separate lab components or the course may be divided into separate learning modules.
Alliance will host a brunch in January for hospital education departments and other selected personnel.
DISTANCE EDUATION UPDATE
Kristi Lozano discussed the Virtual College Report for the academic year 1999. Some of the issues included the high student/teaching point ratio per class, lack of copyright policies, delay of textbook selection, and the need for a system to establish course revision and updating.
Virtual College currently has three major grant sources: Microsoft Grant, HETS-LAAP Grant, and AV-ALN Grant. The report lists the goals for 2000-1. Kristi Lozano reported that the SAC’s review went well. Virtual College needs more support and plans to hire a part time curriculum coordinator immediately to work one on one with faculty.
Diann Gregory questioned why a course that is entirely virtual is being offered through WEB CT and not Virtual College. WEB CT is a course that is Web assisted and not really virtual. It was requested that WEB CT be offered at the Medical Center Campus.
C. T. & D. PLANNING
Carol Petrozella and Ellyn Biggs distributed the November calendar and flyers of upcoming training and workshops. The Communicating with Hearing-Impaired Persons
Workshop needs more individuals to sign up. This workshop was requested. Both Carol Petrozella and Ellyn Biggs will conduct separate Needs Assessment Workshops for faculty and staff. The technology workshop schedule for Spring Term, 2000-2 is available.
A workshop on the Electronic Grade Book will be offered on November 6, 2000. A lengthy discussion ensued concerning the new electronic grade book. The old DOS application has been replaced with a new windows application that is not user friendly. All faculty will require training on how to use the new system. There is no manual or tutorial available at this time. Part time faculty will have to maintain their grades on campus on computers that have the software loaded for the grade book.
Ellyn Biggs stated that she would work with faculty who attend workshops that can be used to maintain rank. All the C. T. & D. records will be updated by next Saturday. A Master Teacher Seminar will be offered Spring Term. Karen Dillman will coordinate the training on CHRIS. A magazine rack containing flyers on workshops and training opportunities will be placed outside room 2301.
OTHER
Susan Kah discussed the proposed curriculum for the Histologic Technology Associate in Science Program. HSC 0530 should be HSC 2531 and this change affects credits. There are some editorial errors and typos. All titles and competencies should be verified for accuracy. Campus CASSC recommended this proposal be sent to College CASSC once the changes are made.
The competencies are based on the State, and national accreditation agency, and other histologic technology programs. An accelerated program will be available for students in the A.S. Medical Lab Technology program. Alisa Abella questioned where the media and library resources for this program would come from. Grant funds are available for library resources.
Carol Miller stated that some of the language in the Veterinary Technology Associate in Science Program is unusual but necessary due to the accreditation agency. Students in the clinical environment cannot be paid, must be under supervision, and in a licensed facility. The above must be stated in the program. Animal Anatomy and Animal Physiology was one course that was split into two courses. The competencies have not yet been divided between the two courses. Some of the terminology in the competencies will be altered for measurement purposes. The document will be forwarded to College CASSC after the changes are made.
Pam Singer raised a question on the change in the drop date for this semester. The old drop date was October 18th and the new drop date was extended to October 31st. Arcie Ewell stated that the notice to change the drop date came out before October 18th and that students should have been aware of the change.
Jerry Brown and Carol Miller issued a legislative alert about a change that, if passed, would de-regulate three boards and eliminate the board examinations in those areas. Two of the three areas affect the Medical Center Campus, Vision Care/Opticianry and Medical Laboratory Technology. The rationale is the saving of dollars. Without the board examinations, there would be no way to measure the knowledge and competency of these individuals.
It was recommended that everyone check his or her professional groups to see if there is the potential for de-regulation. Jerry Brown will E-mail a sample letter that could be altered and sent to legislators, the governor and others.
Open House will be Thursday, October 26, 2000 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Fran Aronovitz mentioned that the Medical Center Campus Health Fair might be held Saturday, April 7, 2000. All programs will be asked to participate.
Next meeting will be held on Monday, November 27, 2000 in room 2304 at 12:00 noon.
