•This
program is open to all ESL students with a 3.0 or
better GPA who are interested in tutoring other ESL
students within level or at a lower level in
reading, writing, grammar and speaking & listening.
Students have to meet on campus at a time
convenient for both.
Background
SHIELD was started during the 2006-2 semester by
Professor Pradel Frank in the Department of ESL
& Foreign Languages in order to help his
students succeed in their EAP classes
and to help with their retention.
During its first semester, the program
had about ten tutors who served about 11
students.
•A
few students were also served during the Summer
2006-3 semester.
•In
the Fall 2007-1 semester, the program
had about 26 registered tutors, who
served about 60+ students and
contributed close to 400 hours to the
program. The program had such a high
growth rate during the 2007-1 semester
due to the support of colleagues in the
ESL Department, as well as word of mouth
among the EAP student population.
•The
colleagues who contributed to
the program for the 2007-1
semester are Professors Dorothy
Avondstondt, Esther Entin,
Maureen McCarthy, and Margaret
Shippey. Professor Shippey also
served as a co-coordinator for
the program.
