Business/ESL Mentor Program
"STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS"
-AN INNOVATIVE TEACHING STRATEGY ACROSS DISCIPLINES
This is a six-week course for ESL students desiring to practice the English language while learning new concepts and terminology applicable to the area of business. The student mentors are generally business students who are taking the accounting course as honors students. They are required to be evaluated at the end of the period by
four different ways: feedback from Professor Riccio, evaluations from ESL
students, review of portfolio and classroom visit evaluation by Professor Cruz.
The student mentors have various responsibilities for this project which are the following:
A) setting up appointment with Professor Riccio to obtain a list of the students
B) reserving the rooms for the classes to be held
C) making copies of all the necessary materials
D) coordinating the class periods with the students
E) preparing the lessons, the pre-test and the post-test
F) meeting at least once a week to have classes
G) keeping the students interested and motivated
H) making sure the students are understanding the material
I) reporting to Professor Riccio on how the students are doing
J) preparing a portfolio to document their performance
The above described activity emphasizes the importance of attending school and learning something that can help students advance and succeed in the real world.
