Institutional Credit-by-Exam (iCBE)
Students can shorten their time spent in school and save on tuition spent throughout their college career by taking any of a variety of tests that will allow them to receive college credit for prior learning up to 45 credit-by-exam credits may be awarded.
Students who have been admitted to the College may receive credit for courses through departmental examinations. Applications for this type of credit are available through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Office and must be approved first by the appropriate academic department.
Institutional Credit-by-Exam Credit Awarded Through Spring Term 2021
Eligibility
- Student must be admitted as a degree or certificate-seeking student at Miami Dade College.
- All official transcripts from other institutions must have been evaluated and posted on the student’s transcript prior to completing an iCBE request.
- Student must have 2.0 or higher GPA.
- Student must have satisfied any prerequisites for the course.
- Student must not have previously attempted to take the iCBE for the course.
- Student must not have previously received a grade of A, B, C, or S in the course.
- Student may not be registered for the course and simultaneously take the iCBE.
- Student must have completed the appropriate iCBE Request Form.
Requesting an iCBE
- Confirm that an iCBE is available for the course. View a list of available exams. Institutional Credit-by-Exams are not limited to the courses on this list. If a course of interest is not included on the list, please contact the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Office to determine if an iCBE can be made available for a particular course.
- Once the determination is made that an iCBE is available for the academic course, all eligible students must complete the online iCBE Request Form.
- Students will be contacted by the Prior Learning Assessment Office to confirm eligibility and assist with coordinating department authorization and registering for all approved iCBEs.
- All iCBE registrations must be completed and fees need to be paid by each term’s published deadline (Last day to withdraw with a “W” grade; register for institutional credit-by-exam).
Scheduling Your Exam
- Once a student registers for an iCBE, they are required to pay fees associated with administering and proctoring the exam.
- iCBE fees - $30 per credit
- Proctoring fee - $35
- Once payment is issued, students can use the site below to schedule their exam.
iCBE Grade Posting
- Grades of A, B, C or D will be assigned for college credits earned by examination and will be computed in the student’s GPA.
- If the student fails the iCBE, the “W” withdrawal grade will appear on the student’s transcript by the end of the term. Earning a “W” withdrawal grade on an iCBE exam counts as an attempt in the course.
- Credits received through iCBE do not apply toward the residency requirement for Miami Dade College programs and/or certificates.
- Credits for departmental examination are not included in any computation of credit load for full-time or part-time student status.
- The grade will become a part of the student’s permanent record at the conclusion of the term in which it is awarded.

Auxiliary Aids and Modifications:
Under certain circumstances, arrangements for auxiliary aids and modifications are permissible. The College makes every reasonable effort to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and experiences for candidates with documented disabilities. These services can include:
