The HESI (Health Education Systems, Inc.) Admission Assessment (A2) is a computerized exam designed to assess prospective students entering the health science fields. The HESI A2 consists of nine different exams, seven of which are required by the Nursing program at Miami Dade College.

The Benjamín León School of Nursing at Miami Dade College pre-licensure Associate of Science in Nursing program requires the HESI A2 for all applicants. Entrance decisions will be based on a formula with the HESI A2 composite score = 60% and the overall science GPA = 40%. Admission is competitive.

Students must have a minimum HESI A2 composite score of 65 to apply for admission to the School of Nursing.

The Benjamín León School of Nursing requires students to take the following seven components of the HESI A2:

  • Reading Comprehension
Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge
Contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both general English-speaking settings and in health care fields.
  • Grammar
Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc.
  • Basic Math Skills
Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc.
  • Biology
Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc.
  • Chemistry
Contains test items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonding, etc.
  • Anatomy and Physiology
Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems.

Students will be allowed four (4) hours to complete the exam.

It is strongly recommended that students wait until they have successfully completed all required EAP, English, mathematics and science courses (Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology) before attempting the exam. HESI A2 scores must be the result of testing in the Medical Campus Testing Center.

Students will be able to view immediate results after the exam, and will be given an official copy (of passing scores only) to submit when applying to the nursing program.
