Program Overview

The C.C.C. in American Sign Language (ASL) at Miami Dade College prepares you with basic ASL skills to communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through expressive fingerspelling, signing, and conversational behaviors.

Learning ASL and understanding deaf culture will benefit you greatly. It will diversify your communication skills, particularly if you are planning to enter or are currently employed in the highly competitive human services and customer relations job markets. By earning this certificate, you will gain knowledge and experience in using ASL and, thus, be able to serve the deaf community and culture. Furthermore, should you decide to further your studies, this certificate is stackable and foundational to the Associate in Science (AS) in Sign Language Interpretation and the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Supervision and Management.

• Evening and Weekend Classes

  The majority of these courses can be taken evenings and weekends.

• American Sign Language, Deaf Culture and Community, ASL Conversational Skills

  Enhancing customer relations while preparing oneself towards an Associates of Science in Sign Language Interpretation.

Program Details

This program uses evidence-based approaches to teaching ASL to ensure its methods are effective. Half of its faculty are deaf, native users of ASL. This program is designed to prepare students with American Sign Language skills to communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through expressive fingerspelling, signing, and conversational behaviors. The specialized courses, with emphasis on sign language and deaf culture, provide instruction in the predominant sign language of deaf communities and are a complete and organized visual language that is expressed by both manual and nonmanual features. This program will not prepare students to become interpreters.
