Miami Dade College (MDC) is the first academic institution in Florida to receive the designation of Program Sponsor by the Florida Department of Education. As a Program Sponsor, MDC is authorized to register occupations, employers, and apprentices to participate in a Registered Apprenticeship Program.

A Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) enable employers to develop and apply industry standards to training programs for registered apprentices that can increase productivity and improve workforce quality. Apprentices who complete a RAP are accepted by the industry as masters in their field. By providing on-the-job training, related classroom instruction, and guaranteed wage structures, employers who sponsor apprentices provide incentives to attract and retain more highly qualified employees and improve productivity.

The Components of the Apprenticeship Program are:

  • Classroom Instruction: Apprentices receive related training instruction that complements their on-the-job learning.
  • On the Job Training: Apprentices receive hands-on training from an experienced mentor at the job site.
  • Mentorship: Employers must provide apprentices with a mentor/journeyworker throughout the apprenticeship program that involves ongoing, focused supervision and training to ensure apprentices have guidance on the progress of their training.
  • Paid Wages: Apprentices start working on day one and receive pay increases as they learn new skills and take on more responsibilities.
  • Certification: Every graduate of a Registered Apprenticeship Program receives a nationally-recognized credential.
  • Periodic Check-ins: Monthly apprentice check-ins and quarterly employer check-ins are conducted to assist with the successful completion of the apprenticeship program.
