Admissions and support information for international students

Maintaining Status

  1. Bring your documents to ISS immediately (including for all your F-2 dependents)
    • Passport
    • F-1 visa
    • Last Entry Stamp or I-94
    • I-20
  2. Have a valid passport at all times
    • Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned entry into the U.S.
    • Must include an F-1 student visa issued by a U.S. Consulate or Embassy, except for Canadian citizens
  3. Enroll for a full course of study
    • Students must enroll in at least 12 credits each fall and spring semester and follow the required course modality for F-1 visa status, including in-person enrollment requirements
    • Students may not drop below 12 credits without prior approval from International Student Services
  4. Summer enrollment requirements

    Summer enrollment is mandatory for:

    • Students starting at MDC in the spring semester with a new I-20
    • Transfer students coming from a language school (non-college/university credits)
    • Students graduating during the summer term

    Summer enrollment is optional for:

    • Continuing active students in good standing
    • Transfer students from a college or university who completed a full-time fall semester of at least 12 credits
  5. Final semester exception
    • Students in their final semester before graduation may enroll part time only if fewer than 12 credits are required to complete their program
    • A final semester verification is required if the student is graduating
    • Final semester verification and part-time enrollment must be approved by International Student Services before the student enrolls in fewer than 12 credits
  6. Students are not authorized to enroll at any school other than Miami Dade College
  7. ATTEND CLASSES. Failure to attend will result in the loss of your immigration status and subject you to deportation
    • Full-time enrollment requires 12 credits
    • Of the 12 credits, at least 9 must be in person or blended courses
    • A maximum of 3 credits may be online or MDC Live
  8. Provide local and foreign addresses to Student Records using your myMDC account
  9. Maintain proper health insurance: Proof of insurance coverage through August is mandatory before you can register for classes. Insurance must be purchased through www.insuranceforstudents.com/mdc
  10. Students are strictly prohibited from employment without prior authorization
  11. Apply for a program extension BEFORE your I-20 expires. Failure to do so will result in loss of F-1 status and all related benefits. The program end date is listed on line 5 of your I-20
  12. Transferring from Miami Dade College or changing educational level
    • Notify International Student Services before requesting a transfer or change of educational level
