Program Requirements

To be eligible to request a milestone review to Miami Dade College’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program, you must complete the following steps:

  • Be 18 years old and have earned, or will earn, at the time of enrollment into the program, a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Visit Medical Campus Program Requirements web page to request a Milestone Review by the target deadline date.
  • • Successfully complete HSC 0003 – Introduction to Health Care (2.5 credits) and HSC 0003L – Introduction to Health Care Lab (.5 credits) by the end of the fall semester in which you are requesting the milestone review. Students can request a milestone review for the September 1st target review date while enrolled in HSC003/HSC003L for fall.
  • Complete of a minimum of 25 observation hours with a licensed Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant. We recommend students complete these hours at a hospital or private practice. The Observation Hours Form (PDF) must be completed and included with your request for a milestone review by September 1st.
  • Complete the TEAS Health Science exam. Students should fill out a TEAS for Health Science - Request Form, and await contact from the Testing & Assessment Department for appointment confirmation. There is no minimum score required to request a milestone review.

  • Enrollment in the program discipline courses is limited and competitive. Meeting the milestone requirements does not guarantee program progression into discipline courses. For this reason, the following criteria are used to determine which students will progress to discipline courses.

Selection Criteria

  1. Minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA
  2. Minimum 2.75 Program GPA
  3. Points awarded in several categories (see below). Program Grade Point Average (GPA) will be used to rank students in the event of a point tie.
  4. Completion of a minimum of 25 observation hours with a licensed Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant. The Observation Hours Form must be completed and included with your request for milestone review by September 1st.
  5. Successful completion of HSC 0003 – Introduction to Health Care (2.5 credits) and HSC 0003L – Introduction to Health Care Lab (.5 credits) by the end of the fall semester in which you are requesting a milestone review. Students can submit a request for a milestone review for the September 1st target date while enrolled in HSC003/HSC003L for fall.
  6. Florida residents will be given preference over non-residents.
  7. Completion of ATI’s TEAS test for Health Sciences prior to application deadline of September 1st (see link under “Admission Requirements”).
  8. Final progression to discipline courses will be based on the submission of all required documents. Please note that there is no waiting list.
Selection is based on the candidate having the highest points earned.

Points will be awarded as follows:

  1. 4 Points for each 1st semester courses completed
  2. Grades earned in 1st semester courses
    A = 8 points B = 4 points C = 1 point Below C = 0 points (Except for English and Mathematics courses)
  3. Grade Point Average (GPA)

    Sciences GPA
    (BSC2085, BSC2085L, BSC2086, BSC2086L, PHY1004, and PHY1004L)
    3.50 - 4.00 = 10 points
    3.30 - 3.49 = 8 points
    2.90 - 3.29 = 6 points
    2.50 - 2.89 = 4 points
    2.00 - 2.49 = 2 points
    Less than 2.0 = 0 points

    3.50 - 4.00 = 10 points
    3.30 - 3.49 = 8 points
    2.90 - 3.29 = 6 points
    2.50 - 2.89 = 4 points
    2.00 - 2.49 = 2 points
    Less than 2.0 = 0 points

  4. EXTRA POINTS
    1 point for each of the following courses completed: BSC 2086, BSC 2086 L, PSY 2012, Humanities selection (ARH 1000, HUM 1020, LIT 2000, MUL 1010, PHI 2010, THE 2000) and CCT or CGS 1060 with a grade of C or higher.
  5. Degree Completion
    Associate in Arts = 2 points
    Baccalaureate = 4 points
    Masters = 6 points
    Doctorate = 8 points
  6. TEAS Test scores:
    92%--100% =10 points
    80%--91.9% = 8 points
    58.7%—79.9% = 4 points
    40.7%—58.6% = 1 point
    0%—40.6% =0 points
